Our missions partner, who planted three churches, is now working to establish a fourth church among Afghan refugees. Their interns are young believers who are growing in their faith and are passionate about serving the lost. Of their 5 interns, one is Afghan. His faith journey began while he was imprisoned in Istanbul, and confronted by a believer. Since accepting Christ, his family has rejected him, but he has developed a new family rooted in the disciples he has met through his work with our partner and in Istanbul. The construction team broke ground on the new church site, a pastor has been hired and a team is meeting on the site weekly. We sent a missions team on November 1 to see the site, pray with the teams and the new pastor, and to learn how we can continue to support them as they build a church.
As part of our vision to REACH, we want to see ten new churches [communities of grace, hope, and love] started. Last quarter, we shared about three that are starting in India, Turkey and Ghana. This quarter, we want to share about a fourth opportunity for a 2nd generation hispanic and multi-ethnic church right here in our Highland Park community. The CARS Ministry at Christ Church has been repairing and giving away cars to those in need for over four years.
On August 12, 2018 the church left the building to demonstrate the love of Jesus. Over 900 people volunteered in 40 locations across Lake County. Thank you for helping us work towards our goal of 100,000 service hours!
On the weekend of June 23/24 we baptized 8 people, bringing our total to 159 baptisms.
Christ Church partners with One Collective. Formerly ITeams, the new name refl ects their mission: “We bring people together to help the oppressed.” This is the opportunity before Christ Church as we help them establish a church for the Afghan refugees. Fleeing continuous cycles of violence and destitution, they are smuggled in as cheap labor. Without legal status, employment rights, basic healthcare or education, Afghans are the bottom rung of the migrant hierarchy and very transient. There is no Afghan church there.
